Moving house can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, it doesn’t have to be. Whether you're relocating locally or heading to a summer rental, a smooth move starts with smart packing. Here are our top tried-and-tested tips to make moving day easier—and keep your sanity intact.
1. Start Early and Create a Plan
Packing always takes longer than you think. Beginning 4–6 weeks before your move gives you time to declutter, organise, and avoid last-minute chaos.
-Make a room-by-room packing plan and aim to do a little each day. Prioritise non-essentials first (seasonal clothes, decorations, books).
2. Declutter as You Go
There’s no point packing what you don’t use or love. Moving is the perfect excuse to let go of items that are just taking up space.
-Sort into three categories: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Bin. Use local charity shops, Facebook Marketplace, or boot sales to clear the clutter.
3. Label Everything Clearly
Unlabelled boxes = confusion and stress when unpacking.
-Write the room and a short description (e.g. “Kitchen – Plates + Cutlery”) on every box. Bonus points if you colour code by room using stickers or tape.
4. Pack an Essentials Box (or Suitcase)
The first night in your new home, you won’t want to dig through 10 boxes for a toothbrush.
-Include: toiletries, phone chargers, a few dishes, toilet roll, a kettle, snacks, and basic tools. If you have kids or pets, include their comforts too.
5. Disassemble Furniture in Advance
Large furniture is awkward and time-consuming on moving day.
-Take apart what you can ahead of time. Store screws and bolts in a labelled sandwich bag taped to the item. Take photos during disassembly to help reassemble later.
6. Use What You Already Have
You can save money and space by thinking outside the box (literally).
-Use towels, blankets, and clothes to wrap fragile items. Pack belongings in suitcases, laundry baskets, or even bins with lids.
7. Avoid Overpacking Boxes
Heavy boxes are a pain to move—and more likely to break.
-Keep boxes under 20kg and balance weight: heavier items on the bottom, lighter ones on top.
Pack with Purpose
A well-packed house makes your move smoother, your unpacking faster, and your stress levels lower. Stay organised, be methodical, and give yourself plenty of time—and you’ll thank yourself later.
